The 'Spectrum' of True Brokenness |

|
Main theme: The "spectrum" of responding to sin within us. People who claim they are "broken" seldom are. There is a spectrum of responsiveness to sin in ourselves. The spectrum runs from defiance to defensiveness, to admission, to remorse, to recompense, to repentance. But even beyond repentance is the state of "brokenness." Brokenness is marked by absolute self-distrust, full and complete confession and disclosure, abandonment of self-protection or self-prescription, a defenseless embrace of whatever circumstances and consequences are established for the person’s sin. Most people, even those racked with guilt after being caught in the worst of sin, fall somewhere else on the spectrum. But brokenness is being utterly undone, abandoning oneself to God’s mercy and allowing oneself to be defined by the sin, while at the same time embracing the new identity and direction the redeemer brings from it.. |

before they meet Christ; he has the capacity to radically and permanently
re-label them. What are you “known” as in your particular surroundings, like
school, extended family, work, neighborhood? In what ways does your history and
past haunt you and follow you? Christ re-defines your identity as one who is
honorable, worthwhile, and valuable. |

God restored Ruth in such a way that not only did this Gentile pagan-worshipper become a redeemed daughter of Israel, she was woven into the holy line of the Messiah himself, becoming the grandmother of David and the matriarch of Jesus. How will God redeem even the darkest of your experiences and circumstances? |

Main theme: The reach of dependence and the kinsman-redeemer There comes a time when even self-dependent and self-reliant people will be faced with a decision of whether they will admit their need and dependence or not. The proud will refuse to do so. There is an element of humility, risk, and even shame that comes with such an admission. But God shows grace to the humble, never shaming them, always protecting their dignity as he responds in tenderness and mercy. This redeeming response to need is the essence of the kinsman-redeemer, which is fully exemplified in Christ toward us. |

Main theme: The “in-between” provisions of God. Even while we are struggling, dealing with
heartache or uncertainty, suffering and wondering how long it will last, God
finds ways to provide and sustain us. The provisions might not be elaborate or
extreme, but “I’ve never seen the righteous forsake, or their seed begging for
bread” (Ps. 37:25). What are some of the ways God’s provision has been revealed
to you even while the suffering seasons have continued? And what lessons can be
learned from even these sustaining provisions? |

Main theme: Faith and disappointment. They aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. The faith step is a scary one, where the object of your faith is uncertain and the road is undefined. You leave what you’re certain of behind and step onto what is unsure ahead. Even when faith is exercised, life brings bitter tears of disappointment. We feel “afflicted” by God, forgotten, emptied and heartbroken. But we can retain our faith and faithfulness to him regardless whether he “gives or takes away.” |

God still looks for those willing to take that risk and stand in the gap for His Kingdom’s advance today. |

and new stories as part of the redemption opportunity Christ gives us. We still have the chance right now to redefine ourselves and our lives. What do you want the rest of the story to be about? |
